The foundation of the Portlaoise Ladies Rugby Team was spearheaded by a local girl Amanda Hade and ably assisted by willing coaches Gordon Matthews and John Guilfoyle. The first team began training in August 2005 and entered the Development Section of the Leinster Ladies League. In their very first season of conception, they managed to win the league and brought great accolade and pride to Portlaoise R.F.C.. The management team remained the same until local rugby stalwart Alan Flynn took over as backs coach in 2007 with Gordon Matthews continuing on as forwards coach. The Ladies team did not manage to replicate their league success of the first year, however they have certainly come close. In 2007 lost out to Malahide in a very closely contested semi-final which went to extra time. Then in 2008 they managed to reach the league Final when their keen rivals Dundalk were victorious to lift the title for the second year running.

Portlaoise Ladies Rugby Team also have quite a busy and active social schedule and latest fund raising events include the production of a Ladies Rugby calendar which has been very well received. They also socialise together after matches and organise Christmas parties among other events. It has been a great way for girls not from the local area to make friends and the Portlaoise Ladies, as well as comprising of girls from Laois also includes those from Offaly, Galway, Dublin, Tipperary and as far a field as Thailand and Sweden!
